About the Project

WHAT IS THE PROJECT?

The project is a portrait book of Holocaust survivors with a brief synopsis of their experience during the war and who they are today. It is meant to be a book that will be displayed in a home, school, etc… Portraits connect people. Many stories, memoirs, history books, and biographies have been written cataloging the atrocities of Nazi regime. This is the first portrait book of its kind. It includes Holocaust survivors from the US, Europe , Canada and Israel.

WHO CREATED IT?

Monni Must, a portrait photographer from Sylvan Lake, Michigan along with her assistant, Linda Schlesinger. Linda recorded the meetings with the survivors with a voice recorder to assure that the facts were accurate.. The recording also served as a tool for Sabrina Must, who wrote the synopsis. They allowed her to get the “flavor” of the person by listening to their voice.

WHO WROTE THE SYNOPSIS?

Once again, Monni teamed up with her daughter Sabrina Must, who also wrote the text for the first book, Living Wintesses: Faces of the Holocaust. More of Sabrina's work can be seen at her website, SabrinaMust.com

HOW WERE SURVIVORS FOUND?

Contacts came from Holocaust centers, schools, and, word of mouth. Over 300 Holocaust survivors are included in the book. The book was completed October 2012.

WHO EDITED THE ARTICLES?

Elizabeth Clark, an educator/administrator at Cranbrook Schools in Bloomfield Hills, MI for 30 years edited the articles. She is also the author of a book on the history of Cranbrook Kingswood.
