About the Authors

Monni Must

Capturing the personality and essence of a person takes passion. Faces and the way light falls on them have been my focus since high school. I graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography in 1978. When I became pregnant with the first of my four daughters, I found a new focus: being a mom. I simply shelved my photography career until I could devote myself completely. My girls are now grown, and I have rediscovered my photographic passion. Through my lens I am able to express myself and my subjects.

Sabrina Must

Writing is my main vehicle of expression. I graduated from Johns Hopkins University in 2008 with a Bachelors in Writing Seminars. As a coping mechanism to deal with my sister’s death, I worked on the Holocaust project as well as my own memoir. Through the written word, I was able to celebrate hardship and triumph, not only in the survivors’ lives, but also in my own. I helped the survivors, and they helped me. New Project:

Living Witnesses: Triumph Over Tragedy

This time, Monni traveled the globe, interviewing and photographing Holocaust survivors to be featured in Living Witnesses, Triumph Over Tragedy. The project, inspired by a successful first book which featured 92 Detroit area survivors, was guided by a dedication to record the faces and stories of one of the world's greatest horrors - and the way its survivors have built inspiring lives in the wake of tragedy. Every story and every portrait is a testament to the power of the human spirit and the will to survive.

This project will be used as an educational tool in schools, churches, synagogues, museums, and at home. It will serve as a reminder that these are “real people.”
